Types of Survey Questions

Opinions Incorporated survey and reporting tools are designed to measure and report on questions of three types: scaleable, non-scaleable, and written comments.  We have a catalog of over 500 field tested questions in over 40 categories which can be used as-is or modified.  Custom questions can also be used as needed.

Scaleable

In our survey designs we most frequently use the 5 point Likert scale: “Strongly Agree”- “Agree” – “Neither Agree nor Disagree” – “Disagree” – “Strongly Disagree.” This particular scale has been in use for over 50 years and is widely seen as among the most effective survey methodologies. Results based on the Likert scale are simple, accurate and valid. Questions are usually phrased so that this scale makes sense. For example, “My direct supervisor creates a work environment that inspires me to do my best”.

Where appropriate, different “anchors” can be used for the scale, such as “Excellent” – “Good” – “Neutral” – “Fair” – “Poor”. For example, “How would you rate your supervisor on creating a work environment that inspires you to do your best?”

Non-scaleable

There are a variety of non-scaleable question types that can be used for gathering data. These questions are percentage based and are not suitable for making historical comparisons. The following types are available.

  • Choose 1 (from a list)
  • Choose All That Apply (from a list)
  • Choose X That Apply (from a list)
  • Choose Top X or Bottom X (from a list)
  • Ranking

Written Comments

Written comments are an important part of many surveys. They must be carefully crafted to elicit information that will be actionable in support of the strategic objectives of the company and the individual locations. We provide a number of reporting tools that will enable you to study and analyze the responses to these questions.
